What drives the price

Linear feet and layout. Cabinets are priced by the run, so a large kitchen with an island costs far more than a single wall. See custom kitchen cabinets.

Materials and finish. Solid hardwood, painted finishes and inset doors cost more than thermofoil or stained slab doors. Florida humidity makes plywood boxes and sealed finishes worth asking about, especially in bathrooms. See bathroom vanities.

Inserts and extras. Pull-outs, drawer organizers, lighting and glass doors add up. Closets and offices are often priced by the system rather than the foot. See custom closets, home office cabinetry, built-ins and entertainment centers.

Trade work and permits. Cabinet swaps alone rarely need a permit, but moving plumbing, gas or electrical usually does. Inside city limits that goes through Lakeland's Building Inspection office, and elsewhere in Polk through the county Building Division. Ask that trade work and any permit be listed on the estimate.

Custom, semi-custom or refacing?

If your cabinet boxes are sound and you like the layout, refacing or refinishing costs far less than new cabinetry. If the layout doesn't work, boxes are water-damaged or you want a different footprint, custom or semi-custom is the better buy. Ask every cabinetmaker for an itemized estimate that lists design, materials, finish, hardware, removal, installation, any trade work and the warranty, so you can compare bids fairly.
